For more than 40 years, our course has welcomed golfers from all throughout Minnesota, as well as from throughout the Midwest. Opened in 1969, it is known as a facility where the whole family can enjoy a round of golf. Our proximity to Grand Casino Mille Lacs means a change of pace is only a short drive away. After many years known as a beautiful and pristine course, our property started to age and lose some of its glory. In August 2014, Hardwoods Golf Course was then purchased by the Appeldoorn family and re-opened in spring 2015 as Northwood Hills Golf Course. We have worked very hard to restore the beauty of our course's original days, and we are excited to share our grounds with golfers like you!

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, also known as Kathio Site, is a Minnesota state park on Mille Lacs Lake. The park preserves habitation sites and mound groups, believed to date between 3000 BC and 1750 AD, that document Sioux Indian culture and Ojibwe-Sioux relationships. The park contains 19 identified archaeological sites, making it one of the most significant archaeological collections in Minnesota. The fourth largest Minnesota State Park offers picnicking, boat, canoe, ski and snowshoe rentals. Visit the interpretive center, take a walk down the Landmark Trail, and check out the 100-foot observation tower. Enjoy the well-groomed ski trails, snowmobile trails, and naturalist programs for families as well.
Mille Lacs Wildlife Management Area
Mille Lacs WMA was established in 1949. Sixty percent of the WMA is forested, with the remainder of land being wetlands, bogs and forest openings. Many fields around the area are planted with corn or maintained as hay land. Forests on the WMA are managed to promote an interspersion of different aged plant communities and enhance wildlife diversity. Logging of hardwood and aspen stands create forest openings and edges between existing vegetation types.
Wealthwood State Forest
Wealthwood State Forest is located at the north end of Mille Lacs Lake. This 15,000 acres of rolling hills has numerous lakes, rivers, and wetlands that attract waterfowl such as mallards, ring-necked ducks, and Canada geese. Ripple River WMA is within the forest and is home to sandhill cranes, woodcock, sharp-tailed grouse, short-eared owls, snowshoe hares, brown creepers, chorus frogs, and four-toed salamanders. DNR forest and wildlife managers work closely together so management activities benefit both wildlife and plant species.
Soo Line Trail
The Soo Line South crosses 22 miles through Mille Lacs County, running just south of the Rum River State Forest, Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, Mille Lacs Lake and Father Hennepin State Park. The trail is provided by Mille Lacs County and the Mille Lacs Drift Skippers Snowmobile/ATV Club. The trail meanders by forests, farmland and wetlands. Two state parks, Father Hennepin & Mille Lacs Kathio, are easily accessible from the trail via low traffic roads. Points of interest along the trail include the "Ellen Ruth," a former Mille Lacs Lake launch, on exhibit one block from the trail in the village of Wahkon.
With more than 300 miles of premier ATV trails between two counties, all connected and ranging in difficulty, the Mille Lacs area will allow you and your ATVs to have the time of your lives. See the woods in a way you never have been able to before, capture magazine-worthy photos and make lasting memories that you’ll want to relive over and over.

If you are not a resident of Minnesota and you’re operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), off-highway motorcycle (OHM) or off-road vehicle (ORV) on state or grant-in-aid trails, you’ll need a non-resident trail pass.
